The House of Representatives passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act on Tuesday with a decisive 358-32 vote, sending the most sweeping housing legislation in decades to the president's desk. The bill, which cleared the Senate last week with similar bipartisan support, aims to address the nation's growing affordability crisis through a mix of tax incentives, zoning reforms, and direct funding.
Key provisions include expanded rental assistance vouchers for low-income families and a new grant program to help local governments update outdated land-use rules. The legislation also allocates billions for the construction of new affordable units, with a focus on rural and high-cost urban areas. Lawmakers from both parties praised the bill as a long-overdue step, though some progressive members argued it does not go far enough to cap rent increases.
The White House has indicated the president will sign the bill into law later this week. Housing advocates are already calling it the most significant federal action on housing since the 1960s.
