A judge has ruled that President Trump does not have to hand over extensive financial information to the BBC, at least not yet. The decision shields the president's revocable trust from a request that would have forced it to disclose a wide range of documents about his personal finances.
The ruling is a temporary win for Trump, who has fought to keep his business dealings private while in office. The BBC had sought the records as part of a legal effort to examine potential conflicts of interest. But the judge determined that the request went too far at this stage, saying the trust does not need to comply with the broad demand right now.
That could change later. The judge left the door open for the BBC to come back with a more targeted request. For the moment, though, the trust can hold onto its internal records, including details about assets, debts, and income streams.
Trump's legal team called the decision a clear victory, arguing that the BBC was on a fishing expedition. The BBC has not commented on the ruling yet, but it could appeal or file a narrower motion. Either way, the fight over the president's financial disclosures is far from over.
