A woman accused of using her position as a caregiver to take advantage of her grandmother's finances has been sentenced to two years of probation. The case centered on allegations that she spent roughly $6,000 of the elderly woman's money on personal expenses while she was responsible for her day to day care.
Court records show the investigation began after family members noticed unusual activity in the grandmother's accounts. Authorities said the spending covered items and purchases that had nothing to do with the grandmother's needs, which raised concerns among relatives who had trusted the woman to manage the household and finances in Payson.
The woman had been the primary caregiver for her grandmother, a role that gave her direct access to bank accounts and other financial resources. Prosecutors argued that she used that access for her own benefit rather than for the care and well being of the older woman.
As part of the resolution, similar charges filed against the woman's husband were dismissed. He had also been accused in connection with the same allegations, but those counts did not move forward.
The sentence means the woman will remain under court supervision for two years. She must comply with probation conditions set by the court, and any violation could lead to further penalties. The case highlights ongoing concerns about financial abuse of elderly residents, particularly when family members serve as caregivers and control access to money.
