Why This Vanguard ETF Is the Only One I'd Keep for Life

Why This Vanguard ETF Is the Only One I'd Keep for Life

I've been buying this Vanguard ETF for years and don't plan to stop anytime soon. After building a portfolio with multiple funds, I've come to realize that if I could only hold one Vanguard exchange-traded fund forever, the choice is clear: Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund ETF (VTI).

The reason is simple. VTI gives you exposure to the entire U.S. stock market in a single ticker. It holds over 3,500 stocks, from the largest blue-chip companies to small emerging businesses. That kind of diversification means you're not betting on any single sector, industry, or company. When tech stocks slump, healthcare or consumer staples might hold up. When large caps struggle, small caps could rally. The fund captures it all.

Another advantage is cost. The expense ratio sits at just 0.03%. That means for every $10,000 you invest, you pay only $3 per year in fees. Over decades, those tiny savings compound into real money. Low costs also mean more of your returns stay in your pocket.

I also appreciate the simplicity. With one fund, you don't need to rebalance, chase hot sectors, or worry about timing the market. You just buy regularly and hold. The U.S. stock market has historically trended upward over long periods, and VTI lets you ride that wave without overthinking it.

Of course, no investment is perfect. VTI is 100% stocks, so it can drop sharply in a bear market. But if you have a long time horizon and can stomach volatility, this fund has a strong track record. For me, it's the one holding I'd never sell.
