Uncertain certainty: navigating the equipment finance market

The equipment finance market is sending mixed signals. On one hand, interest rates have stabilized after a period of aggressive hikes, offering a degree of predictability. On the other, lingering inflation and shifting supply chains mean that "certainty" is a relative term for buyers and lenders alike.

For new equipment, the story is one of cautious optimism. Dealers report that while order books are full, many buyers are hesitating at the final stage, waiting for rates to drop further. This has led to a rise in short-term financing options and balloon payments, where borrowers bet they can refinance at a lower rate in two or three years. Lenders, however, are tightening their underwriting standards, demanding higher down payments and stronger balance sheets.

The used equipment market tells a different tale. After a post-pandemic spike in values, prices have softened. This is good news for buyers looking for bargains, but it creates a headache for lenders holding depreciating assets. Repossession rates are ticking up, and auction volumes are rising. The key challenge is accurate valuation. A machine that was worth a premium 18 months ago may now be worth significantly less, making loan-to-value ratios a moving target.

the market is in a state of adjustment. The era of cheap money is over, and the era of easy credit is fading. Success now depends on realistic appraisals, flexible deal structures, and a clear-eyed view of where the economy is headed. For those willing to navigate the uncertainty, opportunities still exist, but they require more homework and less reliance on hope.
