Mercedes may have a winner on its hands with the new CLA 250+, a vehicle that directly targets the Tesla Model 3. The German automaker has managed to deliver a more luxurious driving experience at a price point that undercuts expectations.
The CLA 250+ enters the compact electric sedan market with a clear strategy. Instead of chasing the minimalist, tech-first approach of Tesla, Mercedes leans into its traditional strengths. The cabin is noticeably quieter than the Model 3, with higher quality materials and better fit and finish. The seats are more supportive, and the overall ride is smoother, absorbing road imperfections that would shake a Tesla.
Where the CLA 250+ truly surprises is the pricing. While the Model 3 has seen price cuts in recent years, the Mercedes comes in at a competitive starting figure that includes features often optional on the Tesla. Standard equipment includes a high-resolution infotainment system, a premium audio setup, and advanced driver assistance features.
Range is also competitive, with the CLA 250+ offering over 300 miles on a single charge in real-world conditions. The charging speed is adequate, though it does not match the peak rates of Tesla's Supercharger network. However, Mercedes has secured access to a growing network of fast chargers, easing range anxiety.
The biggest compromise is performance. The CLA 250+ is not as quick off the line as the Model 3. It prioritizes smooth, effortless cruising over neck-snapping acceleration. For buyers who value comfort and refinement over stoplight drag races, this trade-off is easy to accept.
Mercedes has also avoided the build quality issues that have plagued Tesla. Panel gaps are tight, and the interior does not rattle. The overall impression is of a car that was assembled with care, not rushed out of a factory.
For anyone cross-shopping the two, the CLA 250+ makes a strong case. It proves that an electric sedan does not have to feel like a gadget on wheels. It can still feel like a Mercedes.
