A financial therapist says that conversation should happen long before anyone packs a bag.

She calls the practice "cash yapping." The idea is simple. Friends sit down and talk openly about money before the trip starts. That means discussing lodging, groceries, restaurant checks and activities, not just guessing who can afford what.

Different budgets create real tension. One person may want a luxury hotel while another is saving for rent. If nobody speaks up, resentment builds quietly and can sour the whole trip. A 50/50 split sounds fair on paper, but it can leave lower earners stressed and higher earners confused about why their friends seem distant.

The therapist suggests naming a comfortable number for each person, agreeing on a shared budget for group expenses and deciding in advance how to handle splurges. Some friends may opt out of a fancy dinner without guilt. Others may cover a bit more if they want an upgrade.

The goal is not to make every trip equal in cost. It is to make sure everyone feels heard. A short, honest talk before departure can prevent money fights later. Friends who can discuss cash openly often travel better together, because nobody spends the whole week quietly worrying about the bill.
