Sparebanken Øst entered its Q3 2026 report carrying a rich trailing P/E of 57.5x and a share price of NOK71.5 that had drifted lower over the past month. For many investors, the story had been simple: a high dividend and a solid Norwegian loan book. The reality in this quarter is harsher.
Net income from ongoing operations for Q3 is effectively flat at around zero, and the trailing net margin sits at only 3%. The stock closed yesterday without any sharp relief rally, which suggests the market is not rushing to look past the weak numbers. A valuation that high leaves little room for disappointment, and this quarter delivered exactly that.
The gap between the dividend narrative and the earnings picture is now harder to ignore. When net income stalls and margins stay thin, a premium multiple becomes a burden rather than a badge of quality. Investors who bought for income may start asking whether the payout can be sustained if profitability does not improve.
The coming quarters will need to show a real rebound in earnings, not just stable lending volumes. Until then, the stock looks priced for a recovery that has yet to appear.
