Set a Fair Starting Line, as Favorites Can Falter

It is tempting to rank your investments by conviction. You might feel certain about a tech giant, so you load up on it. Meanwhile, that small utility company feels like a side bet, so you give it a tiny slice. That instinct, however, can quietly undermine your returns. The smarter approach is to give every stock the same starting weight, no matter how confident you are.

The reason is simple: favorites falter. A company with a great story, strong earnings, or a beloved CEO can still stumble on bad news, a missed quarter, or a sudden shift in consumer habits. If that stock is your biggest holding, the damage hits harder. By keeping all positions equal at the start, you protect yourself from your own bias. You are not saying every company is equally good. You are saying that your prediction about the future is not reliable enough to bet heavily on one name.

This method also forces discipline. When a stock rises, it naturally becomes a larger part of your portfolio. To keep the starting line fair, you trim it back. When another stock falls, you buy more to bring it back to its target size. That means you are selling high and buying low, automatically. It removes emotion from the process.

Yes, it feels odd to treat a shaky startup the same as a blue chip. But the market does not reward certainty. It rewards humility. A fair starting line keeps your portfolio balanced, your risk spread, and your mind open to the fact that the next winner might be the stock you almost ignored.
