Mission Mayoral Candidates Clash Over City Finances, Leadership and Accountability

Incumbent Mayor Norie Gonzalez Garza and challenger Ricardo "Rick" Salinas offered voters two very different pictures of the city during an October 14, 2026, mayoral forum held at Freedom Life Church. The two candidates used the event to argue over Mission's financial health, the quality of its leadership, and the direction of its economic development efforts.

Gonzalez Garza defended the current administration, pointing to steady growth and what she described as responsible budgeting through difficult years. She said the city has kept services running while avoiding steep tax increases, and she credited ongoing commercial projects with bringing new revenue and jobs to the area.

Salinas pushed back hard on that account. He claimed residents are not seeing the benefits of reported growth, arguing that spending decisions lack transparency and that too much money flows to favored projects instead of basic needs like streets, drainage, and public safety. He called for a full review of the budget and said accountability has been missing at city hall.

The exchange grew tense at times as each candidate questioned the other's record. Gonzalez Garza said her opponent's criticism ignores real progress and warned that his proposals could slow momentum. Salinas countered that asking tough questions is not an attack on the city but a duty owed to taxpayers.

Both candidates agreed on one point: the election will turn on whether voters believe Mission is heading in the right direction or needs a change in course.
