Governor Sherrill Selects Christopher Peterson to Lead New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs

Governor Mikie Sherrill has announced her intent to nominate Christopher L. Peterson as the next director of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. Peterson, widely recognized as one of the country's leading scholars on consumer protection, brings a deep background in financial regulation and legal advocacy to the role.

Peterson currently serves as a law professor at the University of Utah, where his research has focused on predatory lending, debt collection, and the regulation of financial products. He has advised federal agencies and testified before Congress on issues ranging from student loan servicing to payday lending practices. His work has often highlighted the need for stronger oversight of financial institutions to protect vulnerable consumers.

If confirmed, Peterson will oversee an agency responsible for enforcing consumer protection laws, licensing professionals, and investigating fraud. Sherrill's office stated that his appointment signals a renewed commitment to holding bad actors accountable and ensuring fair treatment for New Jersey residents in the marketplace. Peterson is expected to prioritize cracking down on deceptive business practices and improving transparency in consumer finance.

The nomination now moves to the state Senate for confirmation. Consumer advocacy groups have already voiced strong support for Peterson, praising his track record of rigorous research and his practical approach to regulation.
