Attorney General Gentner Drummond, working alongside a coalition of 17 other attorneys general, has reached a settlement with Snap Finance valued at nearly $664 million. The agreement resolves allegations involving the company's consumer financing practices and marks one of the larger multistate actions taken against a consumer lending firm in recent years.
The settlement follows an investigation into Snap Finance's business model, which offers lease-to-own financing options to consumers with limited or damaged credit histories. Authorities raised concerns about how the company marketed its products and disclosed costs to borrowers, particularly regarding the true expense of financing arrangements that often carried high effective interest rates.
Under the terms of the agreement, Snap Finance will provide monetary relief and change several of its business practices. The company is expected to pay into a fund that will be distributed among participating states, with a portion directed toward affected consumers. The settlement also includes requirements for clearer disclosures and more transparent pricing so borrowers can better understand the total cost of their financing agreements before signing.
Drummond emphasized that protecting consumers from deceptive financial practices remains a priority for his office. He noted that families who turn to alternative financing options are often in vulnerable positions and deserve honest, straightforward terms rather than confusing contracts that hide the real cost of borrowing.
The coalition of attorneys general coordinated their efforts across state lines, reflecting a broader push to hold non-traditional lenders accountable. Snap Finance has stated it will comply with the settlement terms and continue serving customers under the revised practices. The agreement still requires final court approval in some jurisdictions before the funds are distributed.
