Matt Brown has resigned from his position as finance director for the Eugene School District, but his legal notice against the district remains active. Brown said his goal is to highlight what he calls poor budgeting decisions, not to damage the district's reputation. He insists he never intended to cause harm, only to bring accountability to the process.
Brown's tort claim alleges he faced retaliation after flagging forecasting errors during the 2025-26 school year. According to the claim, his warnings about budget shortfalls were ignored, and instead of addressing the issues, district leadership turned against him. Brown says the response to his concerns was punitive, which ultimately pushed him to step away from the role.
The resignation does not pause the legal proceedings. The tort claim is still being reviewed, and Brown's legal team says they are prepared to move forward if the district does not offer a settlement. A tort claim is typically a precursor to a lawsuit, giving the government entity a chance to respond before formal litigation begins.
District officials have not commented on the specifics of the claim, but they have acknowledged Brown's departure. The school board is now tasked with finding an interim finance director while the budget process for the upcoming year continues. Brown said he hopes the district learns from this experience and makes more transparent financial decisions going forward.
